Love my instructors advise too. Sometimes I get so caught up on the technicals that I forget to play. The violin, in my opinion, is the most passionate instrument. It should be played with soul. Some day it will click, I hope. Thanks so much for your comment. If you ever get to the point where you’d like to post a video let me know. We can share it here.

Vickey, CLAP,CLAP,CLAP………..Sounds wonderful, that is a lovely song. Don’t stop now! I love that advice “play like you are a violinist”. I think of that as I play Swing low, Sweet Chariot. Still working on that piece, but it is a break from the lesson book. Which I am now on page 33 after playing for about 9 months. I still have a problem getting that damm little finger to reach for the A but it is getting better. Coward that I am, still haven’t played along with the cd. I’ll have to add that in my practice in the near future. I play a 100 yr old German strad. copy. Sounds impressive but value is equivalent to a beginner set-up. It was given to me by a friend about 40 yrs ago and at 56 that seems like a life time ago. I like the idea of its’ history and hope some will transfer to my fingers, by magic perhaps? nice to see your still enthusiastic to learn and you do not allow your age to deter you. I consider the violin as one of the most beautiful instrument one could have, hope you enjoy learning and playing it at the same time.

Wow Annie. sure doesn’t feel that way. But thank you. I’ve been practicing using more of the bow so maybe that’s the fluidity you’re seeing. Have you tried play along cd’s?

Hi Sara, Thank you for commenting, always so fun to connect with other fiddlers. I’m renting to own my violin. I think the total was $1500, so at $52 a month I think I’ll have it paid off in 3 years, ha!. That way I can keep up with my dental appointments too. Probably more important than fiddling.

Hi Annie, So nice to hear from you. I just turned 59, about a year into this adventure. It’s hard to stay motivated sometimes but like many things in life I try to find something to keep it fresh and interesting. Wouldn’t it neat to be good at this? I took a quick look at the Suzuki method how do you like it? My instructor plays both classical and fiddle suggested the All For Strings books. Learning to read music. I TRY to practice every day even if it’s just a half an hour running through scales or doing bowing exercises. I hope it brings you as much joy as it has brought me. See you on facebook.

I stumbled upon your web blog and now it is one of my favorites. I am also an adult beginner to the violin, starting with a high school student teaching me out of Suzuki book 1. I am older, 61 years, loved to play and am now more motivated to practice consistently. Maybe I’ll do a youtube down load too. So keep blogging with my gratitude.

Hi Katie, Thanks for commenting and congratulations on taking on such a challenging instrument. I have the Essential 2000 book/dvd too, suggested to me from my original teacher. I found the dvd helpful for improving my rhythm. I admire you for taking this on without a teacher. Did you know how to read music before or did you play another instrument? I haven’t had a lesson in a couple of months and I really miss the guidance. Interesting to hear how you found me. You may want to check out the link I have on my blog to All Things Strings, they have groups for us adult learners. Thanks again for the comment and let me know how you’re doing from time to time.

Vickey, thanks for sharing your practice. I found you when searching for adult beginner violin. I, too, always wanted to learn. I just started 5 months ago. No lessons yet. I use “essential elements 2000 for strings”, it does have a dvd play along. But I have never used it. I have the same issue with that 4th finger. I put a korg tuner on the music stand. Slooowly getting better sound. Keep playing, as my 26yr old son tells me, when I become discouraged. “If it was easy, everyone would play”. Katie
